Christian Faith and Practice

Five Solas Solo Christo, Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Soli Deo Gloria

My 3rd great grandfather, David McLeod, left us a statement of faith as a prolog to his Will that speaks volumes for the sense of trust in Jesus Christ that I have come to understand. Here is that prolog dated 3 February 1849. I can not improve on this statement.

In the name of God Amen. I David McLeod of the West River of Pictou in the county of Pictou Farmer being in perfect mind and memory but weak in body calling into mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament, that is to say, first of all I resign soul into the hand of Almighty God, and my body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my Executors hereinafter to be named and all my just debts to be paid and respecting the Worldly property with which it has pleased God to bless me in this life, I give and dispose of the same in the following manner.

Do you have a reason to reject the Christian Message?

Three major stumbling blocks to accepting the Christian Faith.

The Bible answers objections.

Doctrine

Why is doctrine important? — Christianity is not copyrighted. The result is that anyone can define Christianity as they please and announce that they are “Christian.” If Coca–Cola were not copyrighted, then anyone could produce a drink of similar color and taste and put it in cans identical to those of the Coca–Cola Company. If the ersatz drink were deadly poison, then the Coca–Cola Company would likely die along with the consumers of the fake drink. It is little wonder that the Coca–Cola Company defends their copyright with great ferocity. In past times the Christian Church defended its “copyright” with equal ferocity and for the same reasons. Today there are doctrines dressed up to look and taste like Christianity that are deadly poison. To distinguish the true from the false, one must learn and understand doctrine, which for Christianity, is the equivalent of Coca–Cola's secret formula. The difference is that Christian doctrine is laid out for anyone to learn and understand.

I wrote thisBiblical Economics — The Bible does not endorse any economic organizing principle but it has a lot to say about the results or outcomes of an economic organizing principle. An economic organizing principle may be considered Biblical when the outcome of the system meets Biblical standards. Most books on the subject of Biblical Economics make a cursory bow toward the Bible and then launch into windy justifications for a libertarian world view. Capitalism has pledged three things: affluence, individual liberty, and that the free exercise of individual virtue would aggregate into a just society. Unfortuately the last of these promises is subverted by the dynamics of capitalism itself, as it strives to fulfill the other two — affluence and liberty.
Truth or Fiction — This is the primier Internet site for hoaxes, urban legends, and raw rumors passed around in email. The author is a Christian. His statement of faith (bottom of page) is one I would subscribe to. The Bible explicitly requires that our Minds be used in His worship. Christianity is a religion based on evidence and not on conjecture or subjective experience. My “Origins” page has a growing list of links to web sites dedicated to puncturing unfounded assertions made by “Christians” who probably have parked their brains in the church narthex. This stuff is not a good witness for Christ.

Miles J. Stanford — Well just to be “fair”. I’m not sure what label to put on Stanford. I have only made a cursory reading of his polemic on J. I. Packer. He has nothing good to say about the Rev. Dr. James I. Packer and I suspect about the long list of individuals indexed on this web page that looks like a list of well known Reformed theologins of the 20th century.
